Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in Oxford, Mississippi. If hair or alcohol drug tests are needed, Accredited excels in all types, with centers throughout the nation for testing. Most times, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair samples are analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other unique testing possibilities.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer these tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation cases. Its main advantage is a longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, with an almost undeniable observation process, leaving minimal room for deception. However, for drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. If collected from near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, not easily tampered with, and can be shipped without hassle.

An ideal specimen for screening and confirmation is a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands near the scalp, which typically weighs about 100mg (akin to a #2 pencil's thickness). For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is best to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. The term head hair strictly pertains to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial processing by integrating the sample into the laboratory's system. This step involves ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, attributing a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any other required data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. It is economical for ruling out drug use in most samples, but positive screenings necessitate further confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require an additional confirmation phase.

For samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug testing is the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Required presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter range.
  • High difficulty to manipulate: It is notably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers usage history: It can exhibit a trend in drug use over time, rather than just revealing recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Conditions such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolites' concentration in the hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
