Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing in Baxterville, Mississippi. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with centers nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Used by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation individuals, hair follicle tests offer longer drug use detection, up to 90 days, collected through observation and are difficult to tamper. For drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means of identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair captures a long-term history of alcohol and other substances by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximately 3-month detection duration for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. To test for EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Utilize a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal quantity of body hair may be taken. By head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal actions in laboratory processing for a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial sample processing in a laboratory's system. This step validates that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is economical for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court validity. All samples presumed positive during Screening require confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is acquired from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is completed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples marked presumptive positive are washed if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection timelines.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's very challenging to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It shows a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth variability can affect metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair follicle testing with conventional urine tests in Baxterville, MS reveals superior detection and reliability. Hair tests excel by identifying drug use over a much longer period, offering a comprehensive analysis. This method's resilience against manipulation stands out, ensuring accuracy that urine tests may not consistently provide.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
