Accredited Drug Testing provides full-service hair follicle drug screening in Byhalia, Mississippi. For those in need of alcohol or drug testing, we are experts in hair tests, with facilities available throughout the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are required. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored options for specific needs.

Recently, drug screening practices have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are turning to this method over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests support zero-tolerance policies, are valuable for court mandates, and are used for probation mandates. The main advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, with a monitored collection that resists tampering. However, urine tests remain superior for identifying drug use within the previous five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within its growing strands, offering a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can provide an approximate 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair imply scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initially processing a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a quick preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While it is cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples with presumptive positive results from Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positive results during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening complex to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory processing, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In the competitive landscape of drug testing in Byhalia, MS, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests in several ways. The accuracy and dependability of hair tests make them a preferred option for detecting drug use over long durations, unlike urine tests which are limited to shorter detection windows.

Employers and courts requiring uncompromised accuracy opt for hair testing due to its comprehensive detection capabilities. Unlike urine testing, hair follicle analysis is nearly impossible to bypass, making it a standout choice for effective substance monitoring.

Extended Detection Window

In Byhalia, MS, hair follicle testing is praised for its extended detection window, capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days in the past. This extensive period provides employers a valuable overview of an individual's substance history, making it an essential tool for pre-employment or routine screenings.

Businesses can rely on hair tests to uncover a more accurate picture of substance abuse patterns. The long detection window makes it superior for assessing ongoing use and ensures informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the most compelling advantages of hair follicle testing in Byhalia, MS, is its resistance to tampering. Unlike other testing methods, hair follicle analyses significantly reduce the risk of adulteration, ensuring that results are trustworthy and indisputable.

Once collected, hair samples are nearly impossible to alter, providing an assurance that the integrity of the test is preserved. Employers seeking unfailing reliability turn to hair testing as their primary choice for monitoring substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
