Specializing in comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings, Accredited Drug Testing offers services in Carlisle, Mississippi. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our nationwide centers are equipped to conduct thorough hair tests. Typically, individuals should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the head or body available for testing, as this sample can detect various substances, including alcohol/ETG and drugs, with tailored options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a standard procedure in recent times. Opted by many employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse professionals, it provides an alternative to the conventional urine analysis. This method is preferred by entities observing zero-tolerance policies due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days, strict collection procedures, and resistance to tampering. Nevertheless, for identifying recent drug use, within the last 5 days, urine tests are still considered reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the growing strand, offering a long-term record of substance use. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence for up to about 90 days. The collection process is straightforward, making it tough to tamper with and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, perfect for testing and verification. For EtG, enhancements, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t an option, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any further data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening checks for drug abuse signs quickly. While Screening is cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result needs to be validated for court credibility. Any samples showing potential positive results in Screening need a further confirmation.

If potential positives appear in Screening, more hair is taken from the primary sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted at lower concentrations than in other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of positive Screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All potential positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 3 months, unlike urine tests with shorter periods.
  • High accuracy: Cheating a hair test is challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Historical usage patterns: Offers an overview of drug use over a span of time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent usage: Drugs become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair tests typically cost more than other drug test methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can affect metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle located under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Carlisle, MS offers a clear advantage over traditional urine tests. The extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, provides thorough insight into an individual's substance use, unlike the shorter timeframe of urine testing. This reliability and accuracy make hair testing a superior choice, ensuring more accurate substance use histories are maintained.

Extended Detection Window

Offering a longer detection period, hair follicle tests in Carlisle, MS give employers a window of up to 90 days for evaluating substance use. This extended timeframe allows for a more comprehensive assessment of an individual’s drug history, thus providing employers with critical data for informed decision-making about potential or current employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
