Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Clinton, Mississippi. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers in cities throughout the U.S. that can conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation often use hair follicle tests. A major advantage of these tests is the extended drug detection period, usually up to 90 days, carried out under observation, making it nearly foolproof. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has attained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a repository for long-term histories of alcohol and drug use by encasing biomarkers within the fiber structure of the developing hair strand. When sourced from near the scalp, hair can yield a detection window extending up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair can be gathered easily, is challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

An ideal specimen for screening and verification involves a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, amounting to 100mg of hair. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair is a viable alternative. In mentioning head hair, the reference is solely to scalp hair, while body hair pertains to all other varieties of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the laboratory handling of a drug testing outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory's system. This involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data not provided via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment to check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening serves as an economical approach to exclude drug use in the bulk of samples, a confirmed positive result is mandatory for court admissibility. Samples deemed presumptively positive during the Screening phase require a subsequent confirmation procedure.

During the Extraction phase, if a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is utilized from the original sample for preparation. Drugs are isolated at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging technique to carry out.

Confirmation for any presumptive positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug analyses maintain the capability to trace drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests that feature shorter detection windows.
  • Reduced potential for evasion: Circumventing a hair drug test proves exceedingly difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delimited historical insight: It furnishes a temporal pattern of drug usage instead of merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detectability in hair for drugs manifests within approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: The cost linked with hair drug tests generally surpasses that of alternative drug-testing approaches.
  • Fluctuations in outcomes: Outcome variability can stem from elements such as hair color and personal hair growth variations impacting drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although widely termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
