Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle substance screening services in Coles, Mississippi. Specializing in hair assessments, our centers nationwide can conduct these tests for drugs and alcohol. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is necessary. Results can reveal traces of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized testing solutions.

Lately, the popularity of hair follicle screening in substance testing has increased. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists now favor hair tests over traditional urine assessments. Hair tests are instrumental for organizations with zero-tolerance policies. They provide an extended detection span of approximately 90 days, offer an observational sample collection, and are resistant to tampering. Nevertheless, for a five-day window assessment, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances by trapping biomarkers within its growing strands. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. The collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. 'Head hair' refers exclusively to scalp hair, while 'Body hair' encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test result processing encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the lab's operations. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry requirements absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for substances. Despite Screening being a cost-efficient means to discount drug presence in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples indicating presumptive positives during Screening demand subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is flagged as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair, albeit at far lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underlining why hair drug testing is among the more challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of positive screenings is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo a pre-confirmation washing as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Unlike urine tests, hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days.
  • Increased test integrity: The difficulty in falsifying a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • Tracks past usage: It provides an overview of substance use patterns over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
