Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Crandall, Mississippi. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we are specialists with centers spread across all cities nationwide, prepared to conduct hair-based testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is required. Hair samples can be examined for various substances including drugs and alcohol/ETG, among other personalized testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent in recent times. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer this method over the conventional urine test. It's especially favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation programs. The main advantage is the extended detection window, generally up to 90 days, collected in a supervised setting, making it extremely hard to tamper with. Nonetheless, a urine test remains the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are now recognized as an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of drugs and alcohol by locking biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month span for detecting substances and alcohol. It's easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to mail.

A 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hair strands (about as thick as a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests with more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When referencing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process for lab analysis of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid check for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

For samples presumed positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug testing is a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation aligns with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a much shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating the outcome of a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical insight: It presents a pattern of substance usage over an extended duration, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires 5-7 days for substances to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug assessments generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests," the actual test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
