Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Crenshaw, Mississippi. For those seeking hair-based drug or alcohol tests, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available nationwide that can administer these tests. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required, either from the scalp or body, to conduct the analysis. Tests can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for substance detection. It's often mandated by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals as an alternative to conventional urine tests. This testing method is favored by entities seeking to enforce zero-tolerance policies due to its extensive detection timeline—up to 90 days—and its supervised process that minimizes the chance of result manipulation. However, for detecting usage within the recent five-day window, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a crucial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the fibers of hair as it grows, hair offers a long-term record of substance use. If collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to about 90 days. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to alter, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For tests including EtG, add-ons, or those beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The fundamental steps involved in lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. It involves verifying that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening efficiently rules out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally admissible. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening process, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation if required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Gives historical context: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolites' concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing stands out in Crenshaw, MS, offering prime advantages over traditional urine tests. A key benefit is the longer detection window, allowing substance use to be identified months post-consumption. This feature is critical for employers enforcing strict drug policies, giving them confidence in comprehensive substance history examination.

Another benefit of hair testing is its enhanced reliability. The ability to cover a broader spectrum of substances enhances its effectiveness. Unlike urine tests, which are limited by the short detection span, hair testing's extensive coverage bolsters its reputation as the superior choice for thoroughness and reliability in drug testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
