In Dennis, Mississippi, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you need testing for drugs or alcohol, our centers, available nationwide, are equipped for hair analysis. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is necessary. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists prefer these over standard urine tests. These tests support zero-tolerance drug policies and probation requirements. Their advantage lies in detecting drug use for up to 90 days with a nearly foolproof collection method. However, for detecting use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month period of substance use. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transportation is convenient.

A 1.5-inch segment approximately 200 strands thick (comparable to a #2 pencil) and nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests extending beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It’s advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is present, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. The term "head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other varieties (e.g., facial, underarm).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test follows four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially entered into the laboratory's systems. This phase includes ensuring the sample's integrity through proper sealing and shipping, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data inputs not captured by a digital chain of custody framework.

Screening involves an initial, rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly strategy to exclude drug consumption in most cases, a positive result must receive confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples flagged as positive in Screening require additional validation.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is collected from the original sample for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair testing as one of the most arduous testing methodologies.

Any positive screening results undergo Confirmation using methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before a Confirmation, all presumed positive samples are cleaned as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can spot drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair tests are particularly challenging to deceive, providing reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a drug usage trend over a duration, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate detection: Substances become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair testing incurs higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Determinants like hair color and individual growth patterns can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although typically known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Dennis, MS, the superiority of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests is clear. Hair testing provides enhanced detection accuracy and reliability, making it an ideal option for ensuring a drug-free environment. Unlike urine tests, hair tests cover a longer detection window, offering more comprehensive insights into substance use patterns and history.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Dennis, MS, offers an extended detection window for drug use, covering up to 90 days. This long duration allows employers to gain insight into an individual's substance history, leading to more informed decisions about potential employees or existing staff. The broader timeframe is a key advantage over other testing methods like urine, which cover shorter periods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
