Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examination services in Dossville, Mississippi. Whether requiring drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is anchored by a nationwide network of centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly supplanted urine tests. This trend is embraced by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts favoring hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair testing appeals to zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial systems, and probationers. Its advantage lies in a detection window extending up to 90 days, with virtually impossible-to-evade observed collections. Nonetheless, urine tests remain superior for detecting very recent drug use, within a 5-day span.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer an estimated 3-month detection window for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat challenging to adulterate, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We recommend weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair relates to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal phases involved in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This incorporates confirming that the specimen was sealed and dispatched properly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid check for drug misuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug usage on the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be admissible in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening do necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methodologies (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is quite challenging to cheat a hair drug test, rendering the results more accurate.
  • Provides historical data: It can present a pattern of drug use over an extended period, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Dossville, MS, hair follicle testing offers substantial advantages over traditional urine tests. Unmatched detection accuracy and resistance to tampering make it a preferred option. While urine tests detect recent usage, hair tests provide a comprehensive overview of substance use, catching even long-term habits. The consistency and reliability of hair testing mark it as a superior choice, minimizing the risk of false negatives.

Extended Detection Window

Offering an extensive detection window, hair follicle testing in Dossville, MS traces drug use up to 90 days. This prolonged period provides employers with a comprehensive analysis of an individual's substance habits. Understanding historical usage offers deeper insights into potential risks, aiding in better employment decisions. It’s an essential tool for maintaining a drug-free workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Dossville, MS, significantly mitigate risks of sample tampering. This testing method ensures reliable and tamper-resistant outcomes. Unlike samples susceptible to dilution or substitution, hair testing jealously guards its integrity. This rigorous approach provides results that are exceedingly difficult to contest, bolstering confidence in the testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
