Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Dubbs, Mississippi. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing and operates testing centers nationwide that can conduct these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown of the head or body is typically necessary. Hair tests are available for drug detection, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made hair testing approaches.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a mainstay in recent years for drug screen methods. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests instead of the conventional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation prefer hair follicle tests due to their extended drug detection capability, lasting up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and being almost impossible to manipulate. However, for drug usage within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred accurate test.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a historical overview, capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. By obtaining hair near the scalp, one can identify alcohol and drugs over a period of up to 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair may be gathered. Reference to head hair implies only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a laboratory’s system. This stage encompasses the verification of proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Although cost-efficient and capable of ruling out drug use across most samples, positive screenings must be verified for court admissibility. Samples appearing presumptively positive in Screening mandate further confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further analysis in Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at concentrations much lower than those found in other methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening results occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing prior to confirmation. The entire procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is challenging to deceive a hair drug test, increasing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over an extended duration, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to surface in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Even though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
