Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Dumas, Mississippi. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we specialize in hair assessments and offer testing facilities in all cities Nationwide ready to perform hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of your head is needed, but body hair may also be used. Tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle examinations. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation choose hair follicle drug tests for their extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, gathered during an observed process. This test is nearly impossible to falsify; however, for drug use detected within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective resource for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug use by encasing markers within the hair strand's fibers. Captured near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to obtain, fairly challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a sample of 150mg is suggested. Usage of a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is advised. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. By head hair, we imply only scalp hair, while body hair incorporates all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The four core stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial intake process of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional information input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug consumption on most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed for it to hold in a legal setting. Any samples with presumed positive in Screening necessitate secondary verification.

If a sample is presumed positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and set for Extraction. During this process, drugs are retrieved from hair at much finer concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug screening is among the most complex methods to administer.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every sample with presumption of positivity is cleaned before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can track drug use for as many as 90 days, whereas urine tests represent shorter timeframes.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests present considerable challenges to adulteration, thus boosting result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical usage: It offers insight into patterns of drug intake over a duration, beyond merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent intake: It typically requires 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Referred to frequently as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle underneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
