Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests in Ripley, Mississippi. For individuals needing a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our specialty is hair testing, and we have facilities in cities across the country capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Our hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or allow for other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become more common in drug testing procedures. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and addiction experts now prefer hair testing over the conventional urine tests. Companies with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers favor hair follicle tests. A significant advantage is their ability to detect drug use over a 90-day period, using an observed collection method, making it almost impossible to circumvent. However, for recent use detection, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures markers within the strands as they grow, offering a long-standing record of substance use. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can reveal evidence of alcohol and other substances for up to 90 days. Collection is straightforward, altering results is challenging, and transport is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hairs (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For tests including EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair is an alternative. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug tests involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning processes the specimen into the lab’s system, verifying proper sealing and shipment, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data requirements absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial evaluation for potential drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach for dismissing drug use in most cases, a court-acceptable result necessitates confirmation. Samples that exhibit preliminary positive results in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the original sample undergoes preparation for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other processes (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening particularly complex.

Verification of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with preliminary positive results are cleaned before confirmation if required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Verification is scrutinized, adhering to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal substance use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to tamper with: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Shows usage history: It supplies a timeline of drug consumption, not just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become traceable in hair within 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other testing forms.
  • Result variability: Differences like hair color and personal hair growth patterns can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Dubbed "hair follicle tests", this testing specifically evaluates the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
