Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Duncan, Mississippi. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialty lies in hair testing, with centers across the country available. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, with body hair as a secondary option. Hair analysis can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be custom tailored to specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over urine analyses. Ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, probation conditions, and legal environments, the hair follicle test reliably detects drug use over longer periods, up to 90 days, minimizing cheating. For drug use detection within the last five days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have gained recognition as an effective mechanism for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair can capture biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows, offering an extended history of substance usage. Collected near the scalp, hair can reflect a detection range of approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advocated. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is advised. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four chief stages in processing a laboratory drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This involves ensuring the sample's sealed and correct shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any supplementary data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. While being a cost-efficient method for excluding drug presence in most samples, a positive test from Screening necessitates confirmation for admissibility in legal settings. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If presumptively positive during the Screening process, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations than in alternatives (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most sophisticated to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive specimens undergo washing prior to confirmation, contingent on necessity. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and extends to the accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug evaluation:

  • Extended detection span: Hair evaluations can identify drug intake for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a briefer detection window.
  • Challenge to falsify: It is notably challenging to falsify results in a hair test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: The test can reveal a trend of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of identifying recent intake: Drugs may require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair testing methods bear a higher cost compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements including hair color and individual hair growth rate may influence drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: While commonly designated as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
