Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to provider for comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Eastport, Mississippi. When a hair drug or alcohol examination is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist, boasting centers across the nation that offer this service. It is essential to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, typically from the crown or body. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored hair testing solutions.

In the past few years, the approach to drug screening increasingly involves hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair drug tests rather than traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug assessments are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and probationary individuals. The significant benefit of hair tests is their ability to detect drug use over an extended period—up to 90 days—with an observed collection that is nearly foolproof. Still, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective mechanism for monitoring substance and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive temporal record of substance intake by retaining biomarkers in the strands of hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair samples can provide an approximate three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and substances. Hair is easy to obtain, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 strands of hair, comparable to a #2 pencil’s thickness and taken nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. The specimen should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the laboratory procession of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This phase involves ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening stage provides a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical strategy to eliminate drug usage in the majority of specimens, a positive screen requires confirmation to be considered valid in legal contexts. Any specimens presumptively positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

In cases where a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), signifying why hair drug analysis is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are subjected to washing before confirmation as needed. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is quite challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of the outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal patterns of drug use over time, beyond recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair strands.

Note: Even though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually evaluates the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
