Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fort Adams, Mississippi. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol using hair samples, we stand out as experts in this field with testing centers nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Our hair tests can detect a variety of substances, including alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for detecting drug use among employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts. Its growing popularity stems from its ability to provide a near 90-day detection period, contrasting with urine tests, which are optimal for recent usage detection. This longer window, collected under supervision, is nearly impossible to falsify, ideal for organizations with strict drug use policies or monitoring probation compliance.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have gained recognition as a potent method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a long-term record of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strands. When retrieved near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection span of up to about three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A hair specimen of 1.5-inch, consisting of roughly 200 strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing of the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, a proportional quantity of body hair may be collected. When discussing head hair, we focus solely on scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair variations (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug test results comprises four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a lab's framework. This includes verifying that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for courtroom validity. Samples that test presumptive positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample return a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methods (for example, urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and under accrediting standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Provides historical insights: It reveals patterns of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Limited recent detection: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests involve higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels within hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
