Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Hamburg, Mississippi. If you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities in every major city across the Nation capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary. Hair samples are analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing options.

In recent years, the methodology for drug tests increasingly includes hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair tests over standard urine analyses. Businesses with strict drug-free policies and judicial mandatories, including probationary oversight, deploy hair tests. The critical advantage of hair follicle tests is the extended detection range of drug consumption, reaching up to 90 days, conducted under supervised conditions, rendering evasion nearly impossible. Yet, for recent usage within five days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective measure for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a chronicling tool for substance exposure by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When hairs are sampled near the scalp, they can reveal substance use from up to about a three-month period. Hair gathering is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and facilitates easy transport.

A section measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) gathered near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both preliminary testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or analyses beyond 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for quantifying the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair and not any other type. Body hair encompasses facial, axillary, and other hair varieties.

Process Overview

The primary components involved in the lab examination of drug test samples consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample as it enters the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes data entry tasks not handled by an electronic custody mechanism.

Screening represents an initial rapid assessment for drug substances. While effective in eliminating drug use from most samples, any positive result from Screening necessitates confirmation to be admissible legally. Samples appearing positive in Screening must undergo secondary validation.

In the event a sample tests positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at a more diluted level than seen in other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug tests particularly challenging to execute.

Validation of a positive Screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Where necessary, presumptively positive samples receive cleansing prior to confirmation. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) designation for Hair and complies with the ISO/IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Benefits of hair drug screening:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine assessments which cover shorter durations.
  • Resistance to deceit: It’s notably challenging to falsify results in a hair drug evaluation, enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronological usage insight: Offers an overview of drug consumption patterns over time, beyond immediate use.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Detectable presence of drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to be pricier compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the examination focuses on analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle under the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
