Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Harriston, Mississippi. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with test centers spread Nationwide offering hair testing services. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is needed. Hair samples can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, there's been a trend toward using hair follicle drug tests for drug screening. Many businesses, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. These tests are ideal for employers with strict anti-drug policies and for those under legal scrutiny. The main advantage is a 90-day detection window, coupled with observed sample collection, making it nearly foolproof. Yet, for recent drug activity within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis stands out as a valuable method for identifying substance usage. The hair captures biomarkers within its growing strand fibers, creating a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug presence. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month insight into the usage of alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

To obtain the ideal screening sample, gather a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, totaling 100mg of hair. For tests involving EtG, additional tests, or more than 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. By "head hair," we mean scalp hair only, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of evaluating a drug test in the lab involves Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is first introduced into the lab’s system—making sure it was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial, efficient assessment for drugs of abuse. It is cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, but a positive result requires confirmation for legal admission. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial batch for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), emphasizing why hair drug analysis is complex.

Positive results in Screening undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary before confirmation. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair tests are difficult to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers pattern insight: It reveals a history of drug use over time rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Non-detectable recent use: Drugs only become evident in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and growth rate variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests," the actual test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
