Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Helena, Mississippi. If a hair or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing takes pride in hair testing expertise, with testing centers across all cities Nationwide that conduct such tests. It's necessary to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for most cases. Hair tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer custom hair testing options.

The method of drug testing has increasingly favored a hair follicle drug test in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now often require a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are crucial for employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals under probation. The main advantage is detecting drug use over a prolonged period, generally up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it nearly impossible to falsify. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair can chronicle a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating molecular traces within its fibers. When cut near the scalp, hair offers a detection timespan of nearly three months for various substances. It's straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch cluster of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both preliminary and confirmatory assessments. For in-depth analyses such as EtG, add-ons, or testing beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. The use of a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. "Head hair" is specifically scalp hair, whereas "body hair" denotes all other types (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The four principal phases of lab processing for a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the first stage of sample processing into a lab's database. This process involves ensuring the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not covered by an electronic custody record.

Screening provides a preliminary check for substance misuse. As a cost-effective strategy to negate drug use in most cases, a positive screening needs validation for court admissibility. Any results indicating potential drug use during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample indicates potential drug presence during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original batch and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves obtaining drugs from hair at concentrations lower than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair testing one of the most intricate methods to conduct.

Each positive Screening result is verified utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. If required, all samples suggesting drug presence are cleaned before Confirmation. The entire lab operation, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can track drug consumption up to 90 days, while urine assessments offer a briefer detection period.
  • Resistant to deception: It is incredibly challenging to manipulate hair drug tests, increasing result precision.
  • Historical insight: This method traces a pattern of drug habits over extended durations, unlike recent-use-focused tests.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent drug use: A time span of about 5-7 days is needed for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug analyses tend to be pricier than alternative testing options.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and personal hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the exam evaluates the hair shaft rather than the sub-scalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
