Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle substance assessment services in Howison, Mississippi. For hair or alcohol testing needs, we excel in hair analysis and maintain labs in all U.S. cities capable of hair sample testing. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically needed from the head or body. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific substances.

In recent years, drug testing methodologies have progressively incorporated hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine exams. Hair tests cater well to employers with strict drug policies, judicial clients, and probationers. Their main advantage is discerning substance use over 90 days, under watchful submission, rendering tampering near impossible. However, for detecting recent 5-day use, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment is now recognized as an impactful method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strands' fibers. When gathered close to the scalp, hair grants a detection window extending up to roughly three months for substances like alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, quite resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising about 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the recommended amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen quantity of 150mg is advised. We propose using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be obtained. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types (like facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The four essential stages in the lab evaluation of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the first phase of processing a sample within a laboratory system. This phase involves ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial speedy evaluation for illicit substances. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive outcome must be confirmed for court validity. Samples appearing presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

For samples recorded as presumptively positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compare to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug screening is known to be the most challenging methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed via methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the recognition of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use history up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests offering a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to deceive: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the precision of results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can outline a pattern of drug use over time, rather than recent consumption alone.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Drugs become noticeable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to incur a greater cost than alternative drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Although sometimes termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the underlying scalp hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
