Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screening services in Lakeshore, Mississippi. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers across the nation available to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair tests cover analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more common alternative to traditional drug testing methods in recent years. Businesses, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse counselors are increasingly opting for hair testing over urine tests. Firms enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation frequently employ these tests. The main advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, with anonymous collection making it hard to falsify results. Meanwhile, for recent usage within five days, urine testing maintains superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100 mg of hair, the optimum sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional screenings, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150 mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary procedures involved in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample processing within a laboratory's system. This stage ensures the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective option for eliminating drug use in most samples, achieving a positive screen requires a confirmation for court validity. Samples yielding presumptive positives in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory procedure ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is very difficult to cheat a hair drug test, making the results more accurate.
  • Provides historical data: It can provide a pattern of drug use over a period of time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally more expensive than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
