Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Latimer, Mississippi. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leading provider in hair testing, with facilities nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or other body parts. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method used in drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are now favoring hair tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero tolerance, legal systems, and individuals on probation rely on hair tests for their longer detection window of up to 90 days, performed with supervised collection, and they are incredibly difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the preferred choice for recent usage detection within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When acquired near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over a span of roughly three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests that exceed 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is present, a similar amount of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample within a lab’s system. This step involves verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Screening serves as a cost-effective method to exclude drug consumption in most samples; however, a positive screen must be confirmed for the results to be court-admissible. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, extra hair is sourced from the preliminary specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in concentrations lower than those used in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to falsify, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: Hair drug testing can establish a usage pattern over time, rather than indicating only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot determine recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Latimer, MS, hair follicle testing demonstrates clear benefits over traditional urine testing. One of its major advantages is superior detection accuracy. While urine tests can only detect recent drug use, hair tests provide a more comprehensive overview. This longer detection window grants more confidence in the results, making it a preferred choice for maintaining drug-free environments.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection period of hair follicle testing in Latimer, MS, offers an up to 90-day window to uncover past drug use. This broader timeline allows employers to gain deep insights into an employee or candidate's substance history, helping in making informed decisions about hiring and retention. Its advantage lies in capturing more extensive drug use patterns than conventional methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Latimer, MS, significantly reduce the risk of sample adulteration, ensuring reliable results. This method is renowned for being tamper-resistant, offering accuracy and integrity in drug testing. Unlike other tests, trying to alter or affect the outcome of a hair sample is almost impossible, providing reassurance to those who rely on its findings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
