Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Lexington, Mississippi. If you're in need of a hair test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on such testing with centers nationwide offering this service. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be sufficient. Hair tests offer the ability to analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a go-to method for conducting drug screenings. Many employers, legal establishments, and substance abuse experts prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. This method serves employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary programs. The main perk of a hair follicle test is its extended detection window for drug consumption, which can reach up to 90 days, as it's gathered under observation and is hard to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more precise when checking for drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. If gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to approximately three months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily transportable.

An ideal screening and confirmation sample involves a 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG testing, additional tests, or over 10-panel testing, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advised. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The four fundamental stages in the lab handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system, encompassing the verification of proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any additional data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive screens must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples considered presumptively positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques confirm any positive screening outcomes. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike the shorter detection periods for urine tests.
  • Low likelihood of manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal patterns of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests," the actual test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
