Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug tests in Lyman, Mississippi. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this area and maintains testing centers nationwide, including all cities, to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other substances.

In recent times, the preference for drug testing methods has increasingly leaned towards hair follicle testing. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, the judicial system, and probation agencies. The key advantage is a longer detection span, up to 90 days, collected with observation, making it difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a potent mechanism for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended overview of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fiber of the developing hair. Collecting a sample near the scalp offers about a three-month window for detecting substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (resembling the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for measurement. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable mass of body hair can be gathered. 'Head hair' implies scalp hair only, while 'body hair' encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test processing in a lab is divided into four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is first logged into the laboratory’s system. This phase ensures the sample is correctly sealed and mailed, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entries absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the initial test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use for most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves liberating drugs from hair at lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence why hair drug screening is one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation for positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirming as necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Unlike urine tests, hair drug tests detect drug use for up to 90 days.
  • Highly resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Shows historical use data: Unlike tests for recent use, it provides a timeline of drug use over months.

Limitations:

  • Invisible to recent use: Detection of drugs in hair begins around 5-7 days after use.
  • Higher costs: Compared to other drug tests, hair tests tend to be pricier.
  • Results may vary: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing far surpasses traditional urine testing in Lyman, MS. The extended detection window of hair tests and minimal chance of deception make them a superior choice for employers who value accuracy and reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
