Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive assessments using hair follicle drug tests in Lyon, Mississippi. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise in hair sample testing is extensive, and we have facilities across the Nation, prepared to conduct your test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or an alternative source on your body may be used. Hair analysis can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized screenings.

In recent developments, hair follicle drug testing is becoming a preferred method. A number of employers, court systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair analyses over traditional urine tests. Companies with strict anti-drug policies, judicial entities, and individuals on probation frequently make use of this method. The standout advantage is its extended 90-day detection window, collected under observation, and its near immunity to tampering. However, for detecting drug use within the last five days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair can encapsulate biomarkers within its strands, offering a retrospective view of substance consumption. Collected close to the scalp, hair samples provide an estimated 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (akin to a #2 pencil's diameter) provides 100mg, which is the preferred sample size for both initial screening and follow-up confirmation. For extended EtG testing and panels beyond 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. We advise using a jeweler's scale for precise weighing. In cases where scalp hair is not available, equivalent body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes preliminary lab system entry, including verification of proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data tasks not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial assessment for illicit substances. It's a cost-effective measure to exclude drug use for the majority of samples; however, a positive screen needs further validation for legal admissibility. Samples yielding a presumptive positive during Screening must proceed to a secondary confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are concentrated in hair in much milder amounts compared to other tests (e.g., urine, saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is carried out using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are purified prior to confirmation if necessary. The total lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation guidelines.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Compared to urine tests, hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days.
  • Challenge to circumvent: The accuracy of hair drug tests is elevated due to their resistance to tampering.
  • Historical usage record: Hair drug tests can map drug use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Lacks immediate consumption detection: Substances become noticeable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
