Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Madden, Mississippi. When a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we are the experts, with testing facilities in every city across the country capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body hair is sufficient. These tests can detect substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

In recent times, the hair follicle drug test has become increasingly common in drug testing protocols. Many organizations, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair drug testing over urine alternatives. Employers with strict drug-free mandates, judicial systems, and those under probation frequently utilize hair follicle drug tests. The key advantage is an extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it almost foolproof. Despite this, urine tests remain the best choice for identifying recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now considered a robust method for identifying substance use. Hair retains a chronology of drug and alcohol consumption by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When cut close to the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to around 3 months for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to alter, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp produces 100mg of hair, ideal for testing and validation. For testing EtG, extensions, or panels beyond 10, 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary incorporation of a sample into the lab's database. This step checks that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any additional data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid examination for substance use. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positives in Screening do require further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction. In this stage, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is annually assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • High resistance to tampering: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historic usage insight: It reveals a timeline of drug use rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Variances such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation targets the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
