Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Marietta, Mississippi. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise lies in hair testing with facilities located in cities across the nation for hair sample collection. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are sufficient. These analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized based on specific needs.

The trend of utilizing hair follicle drug testing has increased in recent years as more employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists opt for it over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are preferred by organizations with strict drug-free policies, judicial entities, and individuals under probation. The main advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection period, up to 90 days, collected under scrutiny, and they are extremely difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the ideal choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a long-term record of these substances by embedding biomarkers in the fibers as the hair grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising roughly 200 strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen amounting to 150mg is advisable. It is recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is absent, an equivalent volume of body hair might be gathered. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal steps in the lab processing of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes confirming the sample’s proper sealing and transit, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any supplementary data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick evaluation for substances of abuse. Although it is a cost-effective strategy to negate drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal admittance. Any samples marked as presumptively positive in Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are pulled from hair at significantly lower concentrations than those in other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are washed before confirmation as appropriate. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to circumvent: Manipulating a hair drug test is very difficult, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It presents a usage pattern of drugs over a timespan, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become perceptible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth fluctuations may influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
