Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in McLain, Mississippi. Whether for drug or alcohol purposes, our expertise in hair testing is supported by centers nationwide ready to administer these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body can be used. Hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other purposes.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained traction in recent years as a preferred drug testing method. Increasingly, employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse experts favor it over traditional urine tests. Employers with stringent drug-free policies, courts, and probationary individuals benefit from such tests. The longer drug detection window—up to 90 days—and observed collection make it hard to tamper with. Still, urine tests remain more accurate for use under 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term indicator of alcohol and drug history by embedding biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair samples can reveal a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to collect hair, difficult to alter, and simple to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) that are nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and / or more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair imply only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in laboratory processing for drug test outcomes are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. It includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid check for drugs of misuse. While it efficiently rules out drug use for most samples, a positive screening must be validated before being court-admissible. Any samples presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

For a sample deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is incredibly challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical data provision: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Differences like hair color and individual hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
