Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in McVille, Mississippi. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with testing centers in every city nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol, ETG, or fulfill specific testing requests.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for these in lieu of traditional urine tests. Companies with strict drug use policies, courts, and probation services find value in these tests. The key advantage lies in its extended detection period—up to 90 days—under supervised collection conditions, making it extremely tamper-resistant. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain highly reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for various substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (approximate width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, and so on).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step in processing a sample into a laboratory database. This step includes ensuring the sample's seal was intact and it was dispatched correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. While Screening provides a low-cost means to eliminate drug usage suspicion on most samples, any positive result in Screening must be verified to be court-admissible. Samples showing potential positive results during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample shows potential positive results in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration than by methods like urine or oral fluid analyses, thus making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

The Confirmation phase of any positive screening outcomes is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with potential positive results undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing is capable of identifying drug use for a period extending to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a pattern of substance usage across an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes between 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests," the examination actually targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
