Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing at Mississippi Valley State University, Mississippi. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our specialization in hair testing, offered in centers across the country, ensures thorough testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the head or body, and analysis may include drugs, alcohol/ETG or bespoke options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become a popular method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals frequently choose this method over traditional urine tests. Businesses with no-drug policies, legal bodies, and probation programs find its long detection period advantageous. The reliability of hair follicle tests extends up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests unless a drug violation happened within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a robust method for detecting substance use, hair testing reveals a timeline of drug and alcohol consumption by embedding biomarkers within the hair's fibers. When obtained adjacent to the scalp, this method can reveal drug and alcohol use for a span of nearly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will weigh approximately 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation processes. For tests that include EtG, additional testing, and/or exceed 10 panel tests, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" denotes only scalp hair, while "body hair" comprises other hair forms (such as facial and axillary hairs).

Process Overview

The four essential phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the preliminary processing of samples into the laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Even though Screening offers a cost-efficient measure to eliminate drug usage for the majority of samples, a positive screen demands confirmation to stand in court. Samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample registers as presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at a significantly diminished concentration compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), positioning hair drug screening as the most intricate methodology to conduct.

Recognition of any positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Samples registering presumptive positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. A comprehensive review of the laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation ensues under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time: Hair drug tests can determine drug use history for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Altering a hair drug test result is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical use data: It uncovers a pattern of substance use spanning time frames, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: A timeframe of roughly 5-7 days is needed before substances are traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically bear higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth rate interplay can affect drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly named "hair follicle tests," this evaluation inspects the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing at Mississippi Valley State University, MS comes down to its extensive accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle tests capture evidence of substance use over a longer period, ensuring a more precise detection. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
