In Mount Olive, Mississippi, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. Whether you need a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing ensures precise results. We have facilities across the country that can administer hair tests, requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Analyzing hair samples for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and specialized options is possible.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become the preferred method for many organizations, including employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts. It's favored over the typical urine test for its reliability. Zero-tolerance employers and legal authorities use it for those on probation, as it offers a longer detection span, up to 90 days. This supervised collection method is difficult to tamper with, though urine tests are still more effective for detecting recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a significant method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it offers up to a 90-day detection span for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, an optimal sample for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be acquired. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test evaluation comprises Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into a lab’s system. This phase ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary check for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most samples, positive results in Screening need to be verified to be court-admissible. Any samples tentatively positive at this stage necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test potentially positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drug extraction from hair is performed at a far lower concentration compared to methods such as urine or oral fluid, which is why hair drug testing is considered more challenging to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positivity are washed prior to confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is nearly impossible, thereby increasing result accuracy.
  • Traces historical usage: It reveals a pattern over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • No immediate detection: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Surpasses Urine Testing in Mount Olive, MS, centers around its superior detection capabilities. With a longer detection window and less chance for tampering, hair testing offers employers and testing authorities a more reliable assessment compared to traditional urine tests.

The accuracy involved in hair testing allows for a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history, enhancing trust in the results.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Mount Olive, MS, is a significant advantage of hair follicle testing. Unlike urine tests, hair testing can uncover substance use over a much longer period, up to 90 days. This extended window allows employers to gain insight into an individual's substance history, offering a more complete picture of their habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
