In Ozona, Mississippi, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing solutions. Specializing in both drug and alcohol hair tests, we operate nationwide centers equipped to conduct such tests, including those in every city. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the crown or body for testing. Hair analysis can cover various substances, including drugs and alcohol, along with customizable testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted the hair follicle test. There's a shift by many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals from conventional urine tests to hair tests. This type of test is favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies and for individuals on probation, primarily due to its longer drug detection window of up to 90 days, with a collection process that’s closely monitored to minimize the potential for cheating. Urine tests remain the best option when assessing drug use over the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures long-term records of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reflect drug and alcohol use within an approximate 3-month period. Its collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and it is easily transportable.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) and taken nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equal quantity of body hair can be taken. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the introductory processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s database. This phase includes verifying the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid test for drugs of abuse. While it’s an economical means to eliminate potential drug use in most samples, a positive screen must undergo verification to stand in legal proceedings. Samples that return presumptive positives in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positives during the Screening stage, further hair is derived from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from the hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), presenting hair drug screening as the most intricate method to execute.

Any positive screening result proceeds to Confirmation conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use over a 90-day timeline, in contrast with urine tests that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to fraud: Cheating a hair drug exam proves arduous, thus enhancing result validity.
  • Reveals usage history: It displays drug use patterns over time, not limited to recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days after consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally entail higher costs than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Disparities in outcomes: Variables such as hair pigmentation and individual growth disparities can alter drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Traditionally, urine tests dominated drug screening methods, but hair follicle testing in Ozona, MS, surpasses them in accuracy and reliability. Hair tests offer superior long-term detection of drug use, examining behaviour over extended periods.

Unlike urine tests, hair follicle testing assesses drug use over a comprehensive timeframe, presenting a more accurate overview of past behaviors and aiding in effective decision-making.

Urine tests fall short compared to hair drug tests in detection reliability. Hair testing's advanced approach offers unmatched accuracy and remains a trustworthy choice, particularly for historical substance use analysis.

Extended Detection Window

In Ozona, MS, hair follicle testing provides an extensive detection window of up to 90 days, offering employers a detailed view of an individual's past substance use, far beyond traditional testing periods.

Hair tests catch drug use from months prior, making them crucial for employers seeking comprehensive screening. This extended detection window allows a thorough evaluation of an applicant's or employee's drug history.

Employers in Ozona, MS benefit from the lengthy detection periods of hair follicle testing, capturing substance use effectively and allowing an insightful analysis of patterns over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
