Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Perkinston, Mississippi. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities located in all cities Nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair samples can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Many businesses, legal systems, and addiction specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle analysis is ideal for organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal proceedings, or individuals under probation. The main advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, conducted through an observed procedure, which is difficult to tamper with. Meanwhile, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drug use within the previous 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective technique for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands as it grows, offering a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to around 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair samples are easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches measuring roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields approximately 100mg, which is an ideal amount for testing. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for analyzing a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial entry of a sample into the lab system. This involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional information entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination to detect drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be validated for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require secondary verification.

If a Screening test indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair in concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex method.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive outcomes are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter window.
  • Inability to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: It can demonstrate a trend of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to disclose recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Outcome disparities: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual growth differences.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
