Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services right in Prismatic, Mississippi. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, we're experts in hair testing with centers ready to assist in cities all across the Nation. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on one's crown or elsewhere on the body are typically necessary. Hair evaluations are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing purposes.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly become a favored approach for drug screening in recent years. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse counselors now demand this method over the conventional urine test. Known for its compatibility with zero-tolerance policies, hair follicle assessments are trusted by businesses, courts, and probation officers. They offer the key advantage of an extended detection range, often up to 90 days, executed via an observed collection process, and virtually immune to deception. Although, for identifying recent intake up to 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol intake. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When procured near the scalp, hair can provide nearly a three-month detection window for both alcohol and other drugs. It is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests extending beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory's framework. This entails verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be permissible in court. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening do necessitate a confirmation test.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction preparation. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation falls under the review of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Reduced possibility to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, rendering results more precise.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a drug use pattern over a period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair in approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variabilities: Elements like hair coloration and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often mischaracterized as "hair follicle tests," the assessment scrutinizes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
