Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Richton, Mississippi. If you're in need of drug or alcohol testing via hair sample, Accredited Drug Testing leads in this specialization, with facilities nationwide that can perform hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp is required, though body hair may suffice. These tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized needs.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly turned to hair follicle testing. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are chosen by employers with strict drug policies, judicial authorities, and those on probation. The primary advantage of hair follicle testing is its ability to detect drug use over a significantly extended period, usually up to 90 days. The test is collected in a monitored process, making it nearly impossible to falsify. However, for detecting drug use within the past five days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol intake. Hair retains long-term evidence of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can provide a detection range of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional screenings, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is recommended. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. The term head hair exclusively refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair varieties (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system. This stage includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive finding must be confirmed to be legally valid. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation process.

If a sample returns a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positives are washed as required prior to confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection range.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides usage patterns: It can reveal patterns of drug use over a duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
