Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Rosedale, Mississippi. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our centers specialize in these services, conveniently located nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored options.

Lately, drug testing has increasingly embraced hair follicle analysis. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts are opting for this method over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are preferred by strict employers, used in court cases, and for probation assessments. Their main advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection, and difficulty to falsify. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most accurate for recent use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses are now considered a valuable tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a detailed record of drug and alcohol use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken from near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol usage over approximately a 3-month period. Hair is easy to obtain, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen quantity of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler's scale is recommended to weigh the specimen. If head hair cannot be acquired, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. References to head hair denote scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the starting point of processing a sample within a laboratory's framework. This stage includes confirmation that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and any essential data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening pertains to an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an efficient method to dismiss drug use in many samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for acceptance in legal proceedings. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening require a confirmatory step.

If Screening results are presumptively positive, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Positive Screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed ahead of confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests present a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are notoriously hard to deceive, therefore ensuring results are more reliable.
  • Reveals historical usage: This test can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent events.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Detection in hair takes approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more expensive compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variances may affect the metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
