Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug examinations in Saint Martin, Mississippi. If a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol is necessary, our expertise in hair testing extends across numerous cities nationwide, ready to assist with your needs. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is generally required. Testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances through customizable options.

The use of hair follicle drug examination has surged over recent years. Authorities such as employers, the judicial system, and substance abuse specialists now often choose hair tests over classic urine analyses. Employers with strict drug policies, court systems, and probation officers regularly utilize hair tests due to their advantage of a longer drug-use detection period, often reaching up to 90 days. Given its monitored collection procedure, hair testing is notoriously difficult to deceive. Although urine testing remains more precise for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a lengthy history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other substances. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, perfect for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in processing a drug test result in the lab involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage where a sample is entered into the lab's system. It includes checking if the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid test for substances. Screening is a budget-friendly method to rule out drug usage in most samples, but a positive result must be confirmed to be valid in legal contexts. Any presumptive positives in Screening need further confirmation.

If Screening results in a presumptive positive, more hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

To confirm any positive screening result, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS is used. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It's highly challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the procedure analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
