Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analyses in Sallis, Mississippi. For those in need of a hair or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting these evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. Hair analysis can determine drug, alcohol/ETG presence, or other personalized options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly integrated hair follicle tests. Such tests are preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationary individuals often utilize hair follicle tests. A major advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process, making them difficult to tamper with. However, for drug use detected within the last 5 days, urine remains the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains long-term evidence of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers in the fibers as the hair grows. When gathered near the scalp, it can reveal up to a 3-month timeline for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair may be collected. When discussing head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in the lab includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, where the sample is logged into a laboratory’s system. This process involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a quick preliminary check for drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug usage for most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening need further confirmation.

If the Screening detects a presumptive positive, additional hair is collected from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations in comparison to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity are washed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Shows usage history: The test can show a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Sallis, MS, hair follicle tests stand out against urine tests due to their superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair tests offer a more comprehensive view of an individual's substance history over time, up to 90 days. Employers and legal systems benefit from the wider detection window, ensuring adherence to drug-free policies. Hair testing minimizes false negatives, providing a fuller picture of one's substance habits.

The reliability of hair testing lies in its resistance to common cheating methods that affect urine tests. By using hair samples, the test overcomes the limitations associated with shorter detection times in urine tests. In Sallis, choosing hair follicle tests supports entities enforcing stringent no-drug policies, making it the preferred method for accurate, reliable substance detection and monitoring.

Extended Detection Window

In Sallis, MS, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window, providing insights into an individual's drug use history over the previous 90 days. This broader timeframe distinguishes it from other testing methods that only capture recent use. The comprehensive nature of hair testing is invaluable for employers seeking a thorough understanding of an applicant or employee's habits.

The expansive detection window of hair testing in Sallis is a pivotal advantage for companies implementing drug-free workplace policies. Over 90 days, this method evaluates continuous drug use, offering a complete view of patterns over time. It enables employers to make informed decisions, ensuring the safety and integrity of their workforce through reliable, extensive historical data.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Sallis, MS leverages hair follicle tests as a tamper-resistant solution in drug testing, reducing the likelihood of sample adulteration. Unlike other methods susceptible to manipulation, hair tests provide authentic results, guarding against dishonest practices. This integrity ensures reliability, offering a clear, true picture of an individual's substance use history without compromise.

The enhanced security of hair follicle tests in Sallis deters attempts to falsify results. Sample integrity is maintained through rigorous collection and analysis processes, making it nearly impossible to alter outcomes. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
