Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Saucier, Mississippi. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, we are experts in hair analysis, operating testing centers across the nation capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common approach for drug screenings. A growing number of employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair analysis over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary individuals find hair testing advantageous due to its extended 90-day detection period, observed collection, and resistance to tampering. However, for detecting drug use within the last five days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as an effective method for determining drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term account of alcohol and other drugs by ensnaring biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can supply a detection window of up to about 3 months for substances like alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, amounts to 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This stage verifies that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any supplementary data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as a budget-friendly means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that screen as presumptively positive require additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and processed for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is recognized as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use over a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a briefer detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Manipulating the outcome of a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, unlike other tests that only show recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become observable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost Factor: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing procedures.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis occurs on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair vs. Urine Testing in Saucier, MS

  • While traditional urine tests are common, hair follicle testing scores higher in detection accuracy and reliability.
  • Hair tests cover up to 90 days of substance history, whereas urine tests only detect recent use.
  • For long-term substance detection, hair testing provides a broader insight, making it a superior choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
