Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Scooba, Mississippi. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, ADT excels in hair testing with facilities across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other customizable testing solutions.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly represented a preferred method of drug screening over urine tests. This approach is favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts for its extensive detection period of up to 90 days, with observed collections and minimal risk of cheating. However, urine tests remain most accurate for identifying recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the maturing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a three-month window for alcohol and drug detection. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, or analyses over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps involved in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample in a lab system. This step involves ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid evaluation for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal situations. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening must undergo secondary verification.

If a sample tests tentatively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with tentative positive results are washed before confirmation if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Tough to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is very tough, making the results more reliable.
  • Delivers historical information: It can show a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing presents clear advantages over urine tests in Scooba, MS. Due to its longer detection window, this method uncovers traces of substance usage more comprehensively, providing a more reliable measure of an individual's drug history. Its accuracy in detection far exceeds that of urine tests.

Furthermore, follicle testing incredibly enhances validity, with minimal possibilities for compromised results. This incapacitates many common methods of tampering found in traditional urine testing, making it a preferred choice for stakeholders.

Extended Detection Window

One of the primary benefits of hair follicle testing in Scooba, MS, is the extended detection window. Unlike other methods, it can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days. This feature provides a comprehensive overview of an employee or applicant's substance involvement, extending insights beyond the mere surface.

Employers seeking to secure long-term safety and compliance find considerable value in this method's extensive capability. By considering a broader timeline, organizations can better gauge consistent behavior patterns directly tied to employee reliability and integrity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Scooba, MS, hair follicle testing provides a remarkably tamper-resistant solution. This method substantially lowers the probability of sample adulteration, presenting results that are both reliable and incontestable. Unlike urine tests, hair samples offer higher resistance to illicit alterations.

This integrity in testing safeguards the entire process from compromised outcomes, thus facilitating unbiased and meticulous results that effectively support policy enforcement and legal compliance. Hair testing addresses resourcefulness critically, ensuring precision.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
