Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Snell, Mississippi. For individuals in need of a hair or alcohol drug test, our specialization in hair testing is unmatched, with centers available across various cities in the United States. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. We can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or create tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, utilizing hair follicle tests for drug detection has gained prominence. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair drug tests over customary urine tests. Hair follicle examinations are sought by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary programs. One notable advantage is the extended detection timeframe—up to 90 days—ensured by supervised sample collection, making manipulation nearly impossible. Yet, urine tests remain the most accurate for substances used within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a crucial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term insight into alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the hair shaft as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or for tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample weight of 150mg is advised. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be provided, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core phases in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into the lab's database. This stage ensures the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and manages additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a rapid preliminary assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be valid in legal settings. Samples with presumptive positiveness in Screening require a further confirmatory test.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards review.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is nearly impossible to falsify a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a timeline of drug use, accounting for past and not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing is usually more costly than alternate testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Often misconstrued as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
