Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Soso, Mississippi. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing, a specialist in hair testing, services all nationwide cities with testing facilities. For testing, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is typically necessary. Analyzing hair can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can accommodate unique testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been incorporated into drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are chosen by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. Key advantages of these tests are a longer drug detection window, up to 90 days, with observed collection to prevent cheating. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a potent method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the hair fibers as they develop, hair presents a history of alcohol and drug usage over time. Hair taken near the scalp offers an observable timeframe of around 3 months for detecting these substances. It is straightforward to collect hair, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch long sample made up of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirming results. To perform EtG, additional, or extensive panel testing beyond 10, it is advised to collect 150mg. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equal quantity of body hair can be taken. When referring to head hair, this means scalp hair only, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.)

Process Overview

The process for analyzing drug test results in the laboratory entails four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, involving the sample’s entry into the laboratory’s system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not provided electronically by the chain of custody.

Screening is an initial, rapid check for substance misuse. It is a cost-effective method for ruling out drug use in most samples, yet a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Therefore, any presumptive positive via Screening demands subsequent confirmation.

When Screening shows presumptive positivity, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair in much lower concentrations than in other test types (e.g., urine, oral fluid), demonstrating why hair drug analysis is complex.

Confirmation of positive screenings utilizes techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure—Accessioning through Confirmation—is reviewed according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug analyses can track substance usage up to 90 days, whereas urine analyses have a narrower detection span.
  • Reduced likelihood of tampering: It is notably harder to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Historical pattern insight: It can reveal trends of substance use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Detection in hair takes roughly 5-7 days after drug consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses generally incur higher costs compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", this examination evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
