Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Summerland, Mississippi. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair analysis, with testing facilities available in cities across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for various options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly utilized hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation due to their benefits. The significant advantage of hair testing is the extended detection window, generally up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process making it hard to falsify. Nonetheless, for detecting very recent drug use, the urine test is still the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lasting record of alcohol and drug use by ensnaring biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An approximately 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation procedures. For assessments like EtG, additional tests, or testing exceeding 10 panels, collecting 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary handling of a sample within the laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data input that is absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug use for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid legally. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening demand secondary confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is considered the most intricate methodology to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive specimens are washed as needed. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under the supervision of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenge to manipulate: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, leading to more precise results.
  • Historical insights: It can reveal a timeline of drug usage over an extended duration, not just recent utilization.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result disparities: Variables such as hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis concerns the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
