Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug checks in Sylvarena, Mississippi. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, we excel in hair examinations, offering testing facilities in every major city across the country. You'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head's crown or body in typical scenarios. Hair screenings can scrutinize drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing choices.

Lately, drug testing often includes hair follicle testing. Many companies, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts demand hair drug assessments over conventional urine screenings. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The primary advantage of hair follicle testing is the extensive detection window, up to 90 days, gathered in a supervised manner, making it virtually cheat-proof. That said, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. The hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers as they grow, offering a prolonged history of substance use. A sample taken near the scalp can present a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, addon assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is recommended. It's advised to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing procedure encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the primary processing of a specimen within the lab's framework. It involves checking that the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any supplementary data absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening offers an immediate scan for substances of abuse. While economical for excluding drug use in most cases, a positive screening must be validated for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in the Screening step must undergo further confirmation.

On a presumptive positive from the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing notably challenging.

The validation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing can reveal drug consumption for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a more limited timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The robust nature of hair drug tests makes them tough to tamper with, enhancing result precision.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a delineated pattern of substance use over time, not solely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection of substances in hair requires about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Typically, hair drug tests incur greater costs than other testing types.
  • Variations in results: Variables such as hair pigmentation and individual growth variations can impact the concentration of drug trace elements in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair fiber itself, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
