Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Tamola, Mississippi. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with testing centers available in cities nationwide to conduct a hair test. A minimum length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is generally necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been adopted as a method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are now more frequently opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judiciary systems, and individuals on probation. The key advantage is a longer detection period, typically lasting up to 90 days, using an observed collection method, making it nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain the best option for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records an extended history of alcohol and drug use by incorporating biomarkers within the strands of hair as they develop. When sourced from near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to modify, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, consisting of around 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil), near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We advocate measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of processing a sample into a lab's system. This step involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid check for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical means to dismiss drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in court. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction preparation. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

Positives from Screening are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with presumptive positives undergo washing as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is exceedingly hard to manipulate a hair drug test, leading to more credible results.
  • Offers historical data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection in hair requires approximately 5-7 days to become visible.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Variations in results: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
