Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Thornton, Mississippi. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol analysis, we are experts in hair-based testing and have centers Nationwide, including all city locations, to conduct these evaluations. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other testing requirements.

In recent times, drug testing methods have leaned more towards incorporating hair follicle drug checks. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists now mandate hair analyses instead of conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, along with courts and probationers, utilize these tests. The advantage of hair testing lies in its extended detection period—up to 90 days—conducted under scrutiny, making it tough to falsify. Nonetheless, for spotting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive history of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the structure of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, considered the ideal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key phases in laboratory handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Verification.

Accessioning entails the early treatment of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This step verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody structure.

Screening offers a swift initial assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be permissible in legal contexts. Any samples exhibiting a presumptive positive in Screening demand a subsequent verification.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening as a methodology.

Verification of any positive screening outcome occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before verification as needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Verification is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use over a span of 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a short detection range.
  • Hard to deceive: It’s extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring precise outcomes.
  • Provides usage patterns: It can reveal a trend of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other forms of drug testing.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
