Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Tie Plant, Mississippi. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities across all cities Nationwide prepared to perform such tests. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either on the head or body, to be tested. Hair analysis can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly embraced hair follicle tests. Various employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine checks. Employers with stringent drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation commonly utilize these tests. Hair follicle assessments offer a significantly extended detection timeframe, lasting about 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are highly resistive to tampering. For the most reliable results concerning drug use within the previous five days, urine tests remain preferred.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair provides a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and other drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to adulteration, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of about 200 strands of hair (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This involves confirming that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Any samples that return a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this procedure, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a more limited detection window.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is highly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, resulting in more credible results.
  • Offers historical data: It provides a pattern of drug use over a duration, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
