Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Vardaman, Mississippi. Whether you need testing for drugs or alcohol, we've got you covered with specialized hair testing. Our nationwide centers, including those in every city, are equipped to carry out hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent for detecting substances. Businesses, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation clients use this method. Its main advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, gathered through an observed process, making cheating nearly impossible. Yet, urine tests remain best for drug use detected in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has grown in recognition as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug exposure by incorporating biomarkers into the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection range for alcohol and various drugs. It is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair—this is the perfect quantity for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-on tests, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory handling for a drug test result encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any further data entry not available in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screening needs confirmation to be permissible in legal settings. Any Screening-phase presumptive positives must undergo additional confirmation.

If a sample is potentially positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Every presumptive positive is cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It offers insight into drug use patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

While traditional urine tests have been the norm, hair follicle testing in Vardaman, MS offers significant advantages. Detections are more accurate and reliable, capturing drug use that might go unnoticed in urine samples. The hair test's comprehensive detection capabilities make it a superior option for those who prioritize accuracy and reliability in screening for substance use.

Contrasting with urine tests, hair follicle testing provides a more dependable detection spectrum, identifying drugs even with low concentrations. This enhanced discoverability offers stakeholders confidence in the testing process, as it minimizes the chances of false negatives, ensuring that substance misuse is appropriately identified.

Extended Detection Window

One standout feature of hair follicle testing in Vardaman, MS is its extended detection window. Able to identify drug use over a period of up to 90 days, this method offers employers a broad view of an individual's substance use history. This time frame surpasses traditional tests, which often lack the same long-term perspective, making it ideal for thorough assessments.

Employers seeking a comprehensive overview of substance use patterns will find hair follicle testing advantageous. Its ability to track extended periods of drug consumption provides significant insights into an applicant's or employee's history, offering information that can guide hiring and monitoring decisions responsibly.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing's resistance to tampering is a critical advantage for employers in Vardaman, MS. Unlike some tests that can be manipulated, hair tests provide results that are difficult to alter, ensuring credibility. This method diminishes the risk of sample adulteration, thus guaranteeing that the results reflect true substance use accurately and reliably.

The confidence that hair follicle testing's tamper-resistant nature brings is invaluable in environments where integrity is vital. It allows for trustworthy results that stakeholders can depend on, reducing concerns about compromised samples and fostering a culture of safety and honesty in the workplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
