Specializing in hair follicle screenings, Accredited Drug Testing makes comprehensive hair drug testing accessible in Vaughan, Mississippi. Whether it’s a hair drug test or an alcohol assessment you require, our centers nationwide, including all cities, can fulfill these needs. Typically, you’ll need 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair, but body hair can also be used. Our tests cover substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other requirements.

The hair follicle drug test has become increasingly common for drug screening in recent years. This method is preferred by employers, legal systems, and substance specialists over the more conventional urine tests. It's favored by employers maintaining zero-tolerance drug policies, legal bodies, and probationary programs. A significant advantage is its 90-day detection ability, along with being monitored during collection and almost impossible to manipulate. However, urine tests are still preferred for detecting recent substance use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of a growing strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to around a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hairs (equivalent to a #2 pencil's width) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred amount for screening and validation. For EtG, additional, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases involved in the lab handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the sample's preliminary incorporation into a lab’s system. This process involves checking that the sample was sealed and correctly sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs. While this is a cost-efficient means to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screening must be verified to be court-admissible. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening need a confirmatory test.

In cases of a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. In this part, drugs are separated from hair with a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the toughest technique to execute.

Confirming any positive screen result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug tests are tough to deceive, making the results more trustworthy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use over a length of time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the testing targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When considering drug testing in Vaughan, MS, hair follicle methods offer a clear advantage over traditional urine tests. Hair testing boasts superior detection, vastly extending the identification window compared to urine tests.
Its integrity and reliability ensure results that accurately reflect an individual’s substance use patterns, giving employers and testers greater confidence in their findings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
