Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services for drugs and alcohol in Webb, Mississippi. We are well-versed in hair testing and have centers across the nation that can conduct these tests. For accuracy, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is essential, typically sourced from the crown or body. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer specific test options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become commonplace for drug assessments. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts opt for hair analysis over urine sampling. Businesses with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers favor these tests due to their extended detection period of about 90 days and difficulty to tamper with. However, for recent drug use (within five days), urine tests remain preferred.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective approach for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended timeline of alcohol and drug presence by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer roughly up to a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for examination and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advised to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a comparable amount of body hair may be utilized. By head hair, we imply only scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages involved in the lab analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the primary processing of a sample within a lab’s structure. This involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial, rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be admissible in legal proceedings. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is undertaken via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical insight: It can present a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
